    Scope and Importance of Geology

Geology is a branch of science that deals with scientific study of the Earth.  Geology, the study of the earth, as a whole it encompasses origin, composition, study of rocks, minerals and fossils, history of our planet, physical features, structures and tectonics and various system of processes of the dynamic earth. Geology is a natural science requires intensive field work to understand the lithosphere hence it is also a fascinating and adventurous subject.

Study of Geology provides understanding about the earth in a systematic and organized way and gives applied knowledge to explore the earth resources such as minerals, metals, hydrocarbons, nuclear minerals and ground water. It provides Geotechnical know-how to resolve problems related to civil engineering projects like Dams, Canals, Highway & bridges and a Geologists also deal in the issues related to water, environment & natural hazards and its management.

Geologists conduct studies that explore and locate rocks which contain important minerals & metals, plan the mine that produces them and the methods used to remove the metals from the rocks. They do similar work to explore, locate and produce oil, natural gas, coal and ground water. Geologists play vital role as geotechnical expertise in construction and site selection of major civil engineering projects. GIS and remote sensing techniques play important role in Geology for exploration of the natural resources and also as useful tool in Geological mapping, planning in various fields of Geology and in water and environmental management.

Geology can be a very interesting and rewarding career. There are bright prospects for the students holding Post-Graduate degree in Geology. They can work as Geoscientist in various Government, Public and Multinational Organizations such as Geological Survey of India (GSI), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Coal India Limited (CIL), Steel Authority India Limited (SAIL), Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL), National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), Atomic Mineral Division of DAE, Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), State Geology and Mining departments and in Cement and Fertilizer plants. Students can also get job as Geologist in mines as each and every mine owner must recruit at least one Geologist according to the norms of Ministry of Mines, Govt of India. Geology also gives self employment opportunities like Mining planner & consultant, Ground water exploration consultant and Geotechnical consultant.

Emerging branch of GIS and Remote Sensing in Geology gives wide career opportunities to the students in various Public sectors and Multinational Organizations.

The teaching of Geology was initiated in the Holkar Science College at the undergraduate level in 1967. The postgraduate teaching started in 1984. The college offers B.Sc. course with Geology as one of the subjects and M.Sc. course in Geology.
